Stella Veritatis, What is it?
For an entire semester, an ensemble of student editors is brought together to discuss and work through various submissions for the issue under their wing. A theme can be predetermined, but it can be the responsive to the threads of connection amongst the themes within each work. Initially the class learns about the history of literary magazines and their place within a community or culture. The “cheap” or more homemade version of these kinds of writing is the zine, which is something that is also seen in said history. The variety of interests and passions that run different magazines allows a perspective to be made, an awareness of why so many different people throughout history fought hard to keep a literary magazine afloat. The rest of the semester is spent going through different submissions and discussing critically why or why not the piece is provocative or contains a depth of meaning. In an anonymous vote, Professor Andersen coordinates the editors to decide which pieces they believe should be published.
